A Word from the Winograd Initiative Lead
Kenneth Grad
It is a privilege to welcome you to the Winograd Initiative and the Winograd Symposium.
The rise in hate speech and antisemitism in recent years has had a profound and devastating impact on the Jewish community and other vulnerable groups. Chuck and Libby Winograd’s generous funding of the Winograd Initiative has empowered us to take concrete steps to address this problem.
In the coming years, we intend to use this support for three main purposes: first, to advance academic research directly relating to hate speech, antisemitism, and antiracism; second, to bring distinguished speakers to Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba to address these urgent and timely issues; and third, to foster student scholarship and deeper engagement with all aspects of law and Jewish life.
The Winograd Symposium advances all of these goals. In particular, by creating an inclusive environment for students to present their work on law and Jewish life, we aim to cultivate the next generation of scholarship in this important area. While some of this work will address antisemitism directly, encouraging scholarship across the broader landscape of law and Jewish life is itself a vital response to antisemitism. By providing a platform for this scholarship, we also seek to counter the sense of exclusion felt by many students in academic and other settings.
Congratulations to our wonderful students and we look forward to welcoming you on May 3rd.
